Leichtnam, Joe (1 July 1872 - 11 June 1932)

Joe Leichtnam, an old and well known resident of Colby and vicinity, died suddenly Saturday afternoon, the result of a fall while building a two car garage at the C. J. Bane home in Colby. Joe Leichtnam. John Schlimm and Oscar Dittmeyer were the carpenters on the job and had the side walls up and were about to put up the rafters for the roof when Joe Leichtnam, carrying a board across the top, lost his balance and dropped onto the hard cement floor. He landed on his feet but his knees seemed to cave in and he fell backwards, striking the back of his head on the cement floor with such force that his skull was fractured. He was immediately taken to the Colby clinic and then rushed to the Memorial hospital at Wausau where he passed away shortly after.

Funeral services were held at the St. Mary’s Catholic church Tuesday morning, Rev. Lang officiating, and internment was made in the Colby Catholic cemetery. The Catholic Order of Foresters, of which he was a member, attended in a body. The pall bearers were Earl Kill, John Ambrose, Peter Apfelbeck, William Will, Jr., Math Orth, John Schlimm. The flower girls were Wanda Hemmy, Marie Zillmann, Lenore Crosby and Marie McDonald.

The deceased was born in Calumet county on July 1st, 1872, thus reaching the age of sixty years. He was married to Mary Laack, daughter of Henry Laack of Dorchester, on May 11, 1894, at Dorchester, Wis. To this union three sons and three daughters were born, one of whom preceded Mr. Leichtnam in death. The deceased lived nearly all his life in Clark county and lived on a farm west of Colby until seven years ago when he moved to Colby.

His sudden departure is mourned by his wife, two sons, three daughters, two brothers, and four sisters. The sons and daughters are Gorman Leichtnam, Abbotsford; Herbert Leichtnam, Fond du Lac; Mrs. Geo. Weinhoetz, Elkhart Lake; Mrs. Sylvia Larson and Miss Margaret Leichtnam, Minneapolis, Minn. The brothers and sisters are Ed. Leichtnam, Abbotsford; Albert Leichtnam, Dorchester; Mrs. Mike Firnstahl, Evanston, Illinois; Mrs. Wm. Herman, Curtiss; Mrs. Rose Simmons, Milwaukee; Mrs. Elizabeth Fisher, Chicago, Ill.

Those from out of town here for the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Gorman Leichtnam and family, Abbotsford; Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Leichtnam, Fond du Lac; Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Leichtnam and family, Abbotsford; Mr. Albert Leichtnam, Dorchester; Miss Margaret Leichtnam and Mrs. Sylvia Larson and son, Minneapolis, Minnesota; Mr. and Mrs. George Weinhoetz and daughter, Elkhart Lake; Mr. and Mrs. Mike Firnstahl, Evanston, Illinois; Mrs. Rose Simmons and daughters, Milwaukee; Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Herman and family, Curtiss; Mrs. Gust Laack and daughter, Elva, Mr. and Mrs. Max Hoffmann and family, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Lindahl, Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Laack, all of Dorchester; Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Tennis and Mr. and Mrs. Harry Mandel, Unity; Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Stock and children and Arnold Laack and family, Abbotsford; Mr. and Mrs. John Helf, Mrs. Alvina Lemmon, Mr. Chas. Laack, Mr. K. Cata, Minneapolis; Mrs. E. J. Neanman and Mrs. Bert Phillips, Milwaukee; Mr. J. P . Andrs and Earl Kidd, Stone Lake; Mr. and Mrs. John Blastik, Ladysmith; Mrs. Armond Christofferson, Stanley.

The deceased was of a very congenial disposition and a good entertainer with hunting and fishing stories. Friendship circle to him was a large one, and when the news of his sudden death was whispered from one to another, a dark gloom spread over the whole community.
