Hoffmann, Joseph Carl (31 May 1855 - 12 July 1930)

Joseph Carl Hoffmann, one of the prominent farmers of the town of Hull, died last Saturday, July 12, at his home, asthma of the heart being the cause of his departure to the distant shore. Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 15, at St. Mary’s Catholic church in Colby, Rev. H. Lachnit officiating, and internment was made in the Catholic cemetery, Colby. The pall bearers were Chas. Aderhold, John Velek, Ed. Brehm, John Sazama, W. J. Brill, and Vincent Vetrovec.

The deceased was born May 31st, 1855, in Dresden, Germany, thus reaching the age of seventy-five years, one month and twelve days. He came to the United States in 1883 and came to Marathon county in 1890. He was married to Magdalena Demerath June 13, 1894, to which union seven children were born, namely: George, Arthur, Edward, Tony, of Colby; Mrs. Nick Kearney, of Ackley, Iowa; Mrs. Theo. Brill and Mrs. Lambert Schommer of Colby. Besides his children, his death is also mourned by his wife and the following brothers and sisters: Herman of Unity; Robert of Medford; Mrs. J. Yeagle of Wisconsin Rapids; Mrs. Mike Orgish of Spencer.

Mr. Hoffmann’s death was somewhat of a shock to his family, relatives and friends for he was able to assist daily with the usual farm work although he had been suffering with asthma for a number of years. His critical illness had been but of a short duration. The Phonograph joins the many friends of the bereaved family in extending sympathy.

The deceased was a good Christian, a devoted husband and a kind and indulgent father; to his friends the soul of fellowship. He was a man of generous impulses and never forgot the hospitable ways of the pioneer. He had filled the various relations of life, as son, husband, father, brother, friend and filled them well.

Those from out of town who were here to attend the funeral were Mrs. Nick Kearney, Ackley, Iowa; Mr. Ed. Hoffman, Beloit, Wisconsin; Mrs. Barbara Demerath, Medford; Mr. Robert Hoffman, Medford; Mrs. J. Vanderhyden, Eau Claire; Mrs. Mayme Spitzenberger, Eau Claire; Mr. and Mrs. Mike Orgish, Spencer; Mr. and Mrs. Joe Yeager, Wisconsin Rapids; Mrs. Joe Burdette, Wisconsin Rapids; Tony Yeager, Wisconsin Rapids; Mrs. Albert Hoffmann, Herman Hoffmann and daughters, Theresa and Louisa, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Bruer and daughter, Agnes, all from Unity; and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hoffmann of Gary, Indiana.
