Carter, Harry N. (17 Oct. 1875 - 14 Sept. 1940)

Word was received at this office last Friday morning of the death of Harry N. Carter, of Portland, Ore. Mr. Carter was born in Humbird, Oct. 17, 1875, second son of Mr. and Mrs. E. D. Carter. He gradated from the local high school in 1892. The following year he attended school at Black River Falls, and then entering the university, graduated from that institution in 1898. He taught in the local schools after his graduation from the university, and then entered the employ of the Shaw Lumber Co. of Eau Claire in an executive capacity.

On Jan. 1st, 1908, Mr. Carter was united in marriage with Miss Ida Augusta Shaw, on Eau Claire. Their home was in Eau Claire until the company closed their operations in Wisconsin, and opened a field in the west. Since about 1911 their home has been in Portland, Ore. After the lumber company disbanded, Mr. Carter became an executive clerk in the office of the state mining board, his brother Archie holding a position as state mining engineer. This position he held until about a year ago when ill health caused his retirement.

Mr. Carter died Sept. 14, at the age of nearly 65 years, and was buried at Vancouver, Wn. He is survived by his wife and two daughters, one sister, Mrs. G. F. Witter, of Oakland, Calif., and one brother, Archie B. Carter, of Portland, Ore.

He was a member of Humbird Masonic Lodge, and had retained his membership here as a tie to the old home town. He also retained an interest in the high school alumni association. His death is mourned by many old schoolmates and friends in this vicinity.
