Staab, Leonard (22 FEB 1845 - 16 JUL 1931)

Dorchester (Clark Co., Wis.) folks were saddened to learn of the death of Mr. Leonhard Staab who passed away at the home of his son, John, last Thursday, July 16th, 1931, of old age. Funeral services were held from the St. Louis Catholic Church Sunday afternoon at 2:30 with Father Paul Pitzenberger officiating and interment took place in the Catholic Cemetery south of the village (Memorial South). Frank Engel, Frank Gonnering, John Schmitt, Joe Geiger, and Anton and Joe Younker acted as pallbearers.

Leonard Staab was born in Bavaria, Germany, Feb. 22, 1845, and was 86 years, 4 months and 24 days old at time of death. In 1870 he was united in marriage to Miss Margaret Rosenberg and settled over there. Six children were born to this happy union, four in Germany and two here. Two of the children, Jacob and Valentine, with their mother, preceded him in death. On May 15th, 1881, Mr. Staab arrived in this country with his family and came to Dorchester as an early pioneer. By continual striving and economy, her watched a beautiful farm grow out of a wilderness of virgin timber. He is on eof that sturdy group who hewed homes and villages out of the forest, withstood the weather of time and flourished as the country became more settled. Perhaps too much praise and commendation cannot be accorded the type of pioneer Mr. Staab belonged to.

Old age gradually crept over Mr. Staab and he gave up farming to live with his children. During the past years he had been growing feebler and while his passing was not entirely unexpected, it came as a great shock to his family.

He leaves to mourn his loss, three daughters, Miss Clara Staab of Ashland, Mrs. Mary Feeney of Marengo, and Mrs. John Premo of Salt Lake City, Utah, and one son, John of Dorchester, Wis. Besides these he leaves 13 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. The children and Mr. and Mrs. Mike Derfus and family of Stratford, were present for the funeral services.
