Schmidt, Ida A. (2 OCT 1856 - 14 SEP 1930)

Mrs. G.F. Schmidt, another of our beloved pioneers, passed away Sunday afternoon at 1:50 after along illness, at the age of 73 years, 11 months and 12 days.

The funeral services were held at the Evangelical Church of which she had been a member for more than 50 years.

Rev. Zellmer of Marshfield and Rev. Bursack, a former pastor here, assisted the local pastor, Rev. Walter, with the service and the Ladies Aid acted as an escort at the church. E.M. Sorenson, Andrew Sorenson, J.E. Allar, Matt Leslie, John Buehrens and Herman Krase acted as pallbearers and Jane Martens, Zelia Whitman, Ruth Ockerlander, Dorothy Herman and Lila and Vera Walter were the flower girls. Burial was made in the Memorial Cemetery.

Ida Anna Kolberg was born in Sheboygan Co. Oct. 2, 1856 and spent her childhood there and grew to womanhood. On Dec. 24, 1872 she was united in marriage to G.F. Schmidt, and they moved onto a farm in Winnebago Co., near Oshkosh, where they resided for six years, when they moved to a farm 4? Miles southwest of Dorchester (Clark Co., Wis.) in the wood. But they, by hard work, made it bring forth the beauty it now has, as many of our pioneers they toiled early and late and endured the hardship of those earlier days happily together to give us the beautiful cultivated land about us. The gift our pioneers have given us, not only in land, but in courage, wisdom and understanding, is ours if we but use it. Mr. and Mrs. Schmidt moved to the village about 14 years ago and it wasn’t long till she endeared herself to all about and she was known to all as Mother Schmidt. She lived the Christ-like life as she saw it, always ready to help and sympathetic in every way. We’re reminded of the words of Eben Rexford, "God gives to everyone a share to do, sometime, somewhere," and she surely did her share and did it well. She may be gone from our sight but will live on in the hearts of her loved ones and also the friends who knew and loved her. Such a life never dies.
