Gumz, Charles Sr. (20 DEC 1868 - 29 JUL 1929)

People of Dorchester (Clark Co., Wis.) country were greatly shocked to hear of the death of Chas. Gumz, Sr., Monday after a short illness. In fact many were not aware of his illness which proved fatal to him. Mr. Gumz had been complaining of ill health only the past two weeks and finally went to St. Joseph’s Hospital at Marshfield where attending physicians put him to bed preparatory to an operation they deemed necessary. However, death came Monday night before the operation was performed and the body was brought to the Fuchsgruber Undertaking Parlor her for preparation for burial.

Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon from the farm home and the Evangelical Peace Church, Rev. J. Bizer officiating. The pallbearers were Frank Gumz, Chas. Gumz, Otto Gumz, Herman Kage, Andrew Bramucker and Max Schaefer, and the flower girls were Helen Kaage, Eleanora and Milda Gumz, Emma Richwalskie and Rosina Stelzel. Burial was made in the Evangelical Peace (Memorial North) Cemetery.

Chas. Gumz, Sr., was born in Redeo Hinderkommen, Germany on Dec. 20, 1868, being 60 years old at time of death. At the age of 22 he came to the United States to join his brother and resided in Michigan for five years before coming to Dorchester where he bought a farm east of the village, which has since been his home.

On May 6, 1905 he was united in marriage to Miss Anna Richwalski, a native of Switzerland, at Medford, and five children were born of this union: three girls and two boys. Freda died about eight years ago at the age of four. The other surviving children are: Mike of Stetsonville; Emma, Henry, and Ella at home. Besides his wife and four children he leaves to mourn his loss, one grandchild and numerous other relatives.

Among the relatives from away present at the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Mike Gumz and child of Stetsonville; Mrs. S. Collins of Hawkins; Mr. and Mrs. John Richwalskie, Sr., Mr. and Mrs. John Richwalski, Jr., Mrs. and Mrs. Frank Gumz of Athens; and Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Gumz of Milan.

Mr. Gumz was a kind husband and parent, a diligent worker and well respected in the community and region, we join with the host of friends in extending condolence to the bereaved family
