Ovans, John L. (21 SEP 1920 - 16 FEB 2007)

John L. Ovans, 86, Spencer, died Friday, Feb. 16, 2007, at Colonial Center, Colby. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 20, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, North Spencer. Burial will be in Abbotsford Public Cemetery at a later date. The Rev. Rebekah Tarras officiated. Military rites were conducted by Colby VFW Post 2227.

John Leo Ovans was born Sept. 21, 1920, in Prentice, to James R. and Lucille E. (nee Boyle) Ovans. He was raised and attended school in Abbotsford, but left school to work with his father in the well drilling business. As a young man, he joined the Civil Conversation Corps. He then joined the Wisconsin National Guard. He served with the 173rd Field Artillery Group serving five campaigns through France, Germany and into Austria during World War ll. He married Phyllis M. Beck on April 26, 1947, in Milwaukee. He worked 22 years for Spector Freight. They retired to Lake Nokomis in 1980 and lived there until moving to Spencer. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis, Spencer; his children, Mary S. (Gerald) Hartmann, Germantown, Kristin L. Ovans, Milwaukee, and John C. (Donna) Ovans, Green Bay; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, George Ovans, Shawano; and two sisters, Mary (Karl) Ewan, Rhinelander, and Lucille Ward, Gresham.

Preceding him in death were his parents; three brothers, James, William, and Thomas Ovans; and one sister, Helen Werner.

Donations may be used for a permanent memorial in his name.
