Etta, Jacob H. (11 MAR 1858 - 2 JUL 1944)

Jacob Henry Etta, son of Andrew and Esther Elizabeth Reynolds Etta, was born in Auburn Township, Fond du Lac Co., Wis., on march 11, 1858. He attended the district schools there, coming to Spencer, Clark County in 1882 where he worked for Joe Marsh at Blakesly Camp and Mapleworks for two winter months, then going to Fargo, N.D. he returned to Loyal (Clark Co.) where he took up the carpenter trade, building many of the homes and the majority of the business blocks there. Mr. Etta bought 80 acres of wild land in the Sherman Township where they lived for a time, returning to Loyal in 1891 and with his brother Thomas, started a shingle and planning mill, which they operated until 1911 when the partnership was dissolved. Mr. Etta then started a flour feed store and in 1913 took his two sons, Elmer and Oscar, into the business, which they operated until 1930 when Mr. Etta retired.

On July 4, 1888 at Colby, he was married to Ann Stange, who passed away on Nov. 23, 1937.

He passed away at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Stabnow in Greenwood at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, July 3, 1944, following a stroke suffered on Memorial Day.

He is survived by the following children: Elmer, Hayward; Oscar, Manitowoc; Mrs. Harold (Esther) Stabnow, Greenwood; Mrs. Fred (Mabel) Tolleth, Wis. Dells; Mrs. Perry (Maude) Volk, Greenwood; and Mrs. Carl (Florence) Keiner, Eau Claire; seven grandchildren, Mrs. Geo. Humke Jr., Kansas City, Mo.; Sgt. Donald Stabnow, somewhere in the South Pacific; S-Sgt. Dale Stabnow, Patricia, Mary and Marie Keiner, Eau Claire, and Robert Etta Hayward; one brother George, Sunnyside, Wash.; one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Koerble, Kewaskum and two half brother, John and Julius of Kewaskum.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, July 5 at 2:00 p.m. at the Harold Stabnow home with Rev. A.E. Norson, pastor of the United Lutheran Church officiated. He was laid to rest in the Loyal Cemetery.

Mr. Etta was a substantial citizen in the early history of the village of Loyal and held various offices and was at one time on the Village Council. He was a member of the Woodman, Beavers and Equitable Fraternal Union. He was one of the last of the old pioneers of Loyal, being in business for over 50 years. He was always ready to lend a helping hand and will be greatly missed by his neighbors and friends, both in Loyal and Greenwood.
