Prock, Mary (11 Sept. 1857 - 24 Nov. 1940)

Mrs. Michael Prock passed away suddenly at her home on South Hewett Street at 7:30 a.m. Sunday, November 24, after a long illness.

Mrs. Prock was born at Jefferson, Wisconsin, September 11, 1857, to Roland and Catherine (Schuld) Schwellenbach, her given name being Mary. She grew to womanhood in the farm home of her parents. In 1879 she was married to Michael Prock, who preceded her to Clark County the year previous and purchased 80 acres of wild land in the town of Weston. He cleared 30 acres that year and built thereon a crude pioneer cabin to which he brought his 22 year old bride. Three years later they purchased another eighty and after long years of hard work and thrift as much of the land as they wished to cultivate was cleared and equipped with fine, modern buildings and good stock. When they left the farm about twenty-nine years ago, it was considered one of the best in the county. They came to Neillsville and built a fine home on South Hewett Street from the timber which he had selected from the farm. Mrs. Prock making her home here until her death. Mr. Prock passed away 25 years ago.

A year and a half ago, Mrs. Prock sustained a broken hip in a fall. She had sufficiently rallied so she was able to get about the house in a wheel chair and to assist with light duties. She had crocheted several hundred medallions for a spread. Completing the one she was working on Saturday, she laid it aside and remarked; "That is the last one I will make." Sunday morning, soon after she arose, she had a sinking spell and passed away instantly.

Of Mrs. Prock it may well be said that she "grew old beautifully." Though rigid in the pioneer principals by which she had always lived, she nevertheless was a lover of vivacious youth, never appearing disturbed by the activity which had been so much a part of her home. She as a member of St. Mary’s church and of the Christian Mothers society.

The departed is survived by two sons and two daughters, Linus Prock, Town of Weston; Edward Prock Owen; Mrs. A. G. Wepfer, Madison, and Mrs. Nicholas Linster, Neillsville, and by 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Mrs. Wepfer spent Thanksgiving and the weekend with her mother and was with her when the end came.

Funeral services were held at St. Mary’s Church at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Rev. J. A. Biegler officiating. Interment took place in the Catholic Cemetery.
