Aurit, A.J. (NOV 1884 - 8 JAN 1938)

Pontifical requiem mass was said on Wednesday, Jan. 12, at 10 a.m., by the Most Rev. William Griffin, D. D., auxiliary bishop of Lacrosse for the Rev. A. J. Aurit, pastor of St. Anthony’s church here.

The bishop was assisted by the Rev. Father O’Shaughnessy, Wausau, acting as assistant priest; by the Rev. Leo Lang. Colby, as deacon; and by the Rev. Gerald Schuh, Cadott, as sub-deacon.

The Rev. Father Keller, La Crosse, acted as master of ceremonies. The Rev. John Novak, Greenwood, delivered an impressive funeral sermon. In the sanctuary were present the Rt. Rev. Msgr. William Reding, Wisconsin Rapids, the Rt. Rev. Msgr. A. J. Dorrenbach, Marshfield, and the Rt. Rev. Msgr. Hauck, Wausau.

In the first pews there were about 15 neighboring priests and in spite of drifted roads and inclement weather the large church, built during the pastorate of the Rev. Aurit, was packed to more than its seating capacity by parishioners and other friends.

Father Aurit’s four brothers and some families from near Cuba City were present. Following the service the body was taken to Elk Grove near Cuba City, his home town, where interment was made Thursday morning.

Pall bearers were Leo Theisen, William Theisen, Joe Wedl, Charles Thums, L. A. Davel, and Ed. Bertz.

Luncheon was served by the Altar Society ladies to all out of town priests and relatives.

Rev. Anthony J. Aurit was born in November, 1884 at Cuba City, Wis., and passed away Saturday morning Jan. 8th, at 6:20 o’clock at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield, hus deth being caused by a heart ailment.

Rev. Aurit was educated for the priesthood at Columbia college, Dubuque, Iowa, and at St. Francis seminary, Milwaukee. He served parishes at Wausau and Cadott before coming to Loyal in September, 1930.

St Anthony’s Catholic church was built the year after the Rev. Father Aurit became the pastor of the parish, and was named for St. Anthony because that was also Father Aurit’s name. The kindliness which was an outstanding trait of his character endeared him to the people of all faiths in the village and its vicinity.
