Lockwood, Pearl (1901? - 21 July 1940)

On the window sill at the local depot, directly above the desk which was Pearl Lockwood’s, a lovely Saint-paulia plant sends forth many violets like blossoms. Pearl had cherished and nurtured the plan all winter, eagerly waiting for the flowers which gave her much pleasure during her last week at the operator’s desk. She was taken to Sacred Heart Hospital, Eau Claire; July 7. On the day previous, through tortured with pain, she tenderly lifted the plant, the better to display its beauty, with these words: "Am I not the florist?"

Miss Lockwood passed away Sunday, July 21. She grew to young womanhood at Birchwood, Wis., was graduated from the high school of that city and later took up a course in telegraphy in Chicago. She is remembered by Mrs. Oden Wang of Neillsville and Mrs. Walter Trimberger of Granton, who attended high school with her, as a brilliant student and a talented musician, freely using her lovely voice and ability at the piano in the work of the Methodist Church. She was valedictorian of her class.

On the 20th day of December, 1917, Miss Lockwood began work as an operator for the Chicago St. Paul, Minneapolis and Omaha Railway company, being sent to Neillsville for one week while the local operator was on a vacation. She worked at Merrillan, Minneapolis, St. Paul. She was recognized throughout the district as an efficient and reliable operator. From January, 135, to September, 1936, she was the agent telegrapher at Chili. From there she was sent to Marshfield for a time before coming to Neillsville several years ago.

Surviving are her father, two brothers, and two sisters. Her mother and a brother, Jay, who was the victim of an automobile accident three years ago, preceded her in death.

Funeral services were held at Birchwood Wednesday at 2 p.m., interment being made in the cemetery there.
