Fowler, William (? - 4 March, 1931)

Former Resident Suicides

News was received here Sunday that William Fowler, a former resident of this village (Humbird), had taken his life while alone at his home in Michigan the Wednesday afternoon, previous.

The information came in a letter from Mrs. W. J. Burton, of Bellevue, Mich. To Mrs. Howard Bigelow. The following newspaper item was enclosed:

Bellevue, March 5 - William Fowler, 63, committed suicide by drinking carbolic acid at his home five and a half miles northwest of the village Wednesday afternoon. Despondency over misfortunes on his farm is believed to have prompted his act. His wife and a friend were shopping in Charlotte at the time of the suicide and the body was discovered on their return. His widow survives him as well as relatives in England where he was born. The body was taken to the Johnson funeral home in Bellevue.

Mr. Fowler was a member of the Modern Woodmen camp of this village, and his assessment for March was mailed from Charlotte by his wife, to the local clerk, Fred Miller on the afternoon of the alleged act. He and his wife left here four years ago to make their home on a small farm near Albion, Mich., hoping that the change of climate would relieve the rheumatism from which he suffered. Several years of adversity here, followed them to their new home. Later they moved the farm where his life ended.

Mr. Fowler was married to Miss Ida Cole twenty years ago. He was an excellent judge of horses and at one time judged the horse exhibit at the Wisconsin state fair.
