Monroe, Joshua "Jot" Melvin (1853 - 27 Aug. 1930)

After an illness of four weeks at the Sacred Heart hospital in Eau Claire Jot Monroe died suddenly on August 27th. He had not been in the best of health for some time past and had gone to the hospital where an operation was performed in hopes of giving permanent relief. Pneumonia followed the operation and after skillful care by a special nurse and the faithful attendance of his devoted wife he had recovered sufficiently to return to his home in Fairchild. Mr. Monroe was dressed and ready to leave the hospital on Wednesday of last week, when he expired suddenly, heart failure being the cause.

The remains were taken to his home in Fairchild, where a prayer service was held at 1:00 p. m. last Friday. Services were held at the Free Methodist church in this village the same afternoon, Rev. J. D. Crandell officiating. Numerous relatives and old friends, both from here and elsewhere were present. Burial was in the family lot in Mentor cemetery.

Joshua Melvin Monroe was born at Osage, Iowa in the year 1853 and was in his 77th year at the time of his death. Since 1867 when the family settled near Fairchild that vicinity and Humbird and Augusta have been his home, excepting a year or two spent in Missouri.

His first wife, and one son, Joshua, preceded him in death quite a number of years ago,.

He was a man of kindly disposition, well liked by a large circle of friends.

Mr. Monroe is survived by his wife and two sons, Merton, of St. Paul, and Ward, of Waukegan, Ill., and six grandchildren. Two sisters Mrs. D. J. Walker of the town of Foster, and Mrs. Leona Ensign of Duluth, and three brothers, George, Frank, and Ernest, all of Oregon besides many other relatives mourn his death.
