Zimmerman, Mabel Marie (May 3, 1898-1925)

Mabel Marie Zimmerman was born May 3, 1898, in Houghtonburg, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles A. Zimmerman. Here she played as a child, developed into beautiful girlhood, attending the school and assisting her mother in her household duties. Here she married, on Nov. 21, 1916, Mr. Ernest Schlegel, and founded a home of her own. They resided on different farms for a short while, and then secured a fine farm of their own in Garden Valley. A new house was completed late last fall. Four children were born to this happy union, two sons and two daughters, one daughter dying at birth.

She was always of an affectionate disposition, bright and winning in her ways, so that friendships circle was to her a large one. It may well be said of her that no one knew her but to love her.

As the children came into the home, she developed the fine qualities of motherhood within her; hers was a life of love--love for her home and dear ones. Sickness entered into the home, and worn with caring for the others, she, herself, was stricken with pneumonia. She was apparently recovering and it was thought the crisis had passed. But she became weaker and suffered a relapse, passing to that Eternal Home about 10 o'clock Sunday evening, aged 26 years, 9 months, 28 days.

The funeral services were held at the home in Garden Valley, on account of the serious illness of the husband, on Wednesday afternoon. Rev. Miller, the Lutheran pastor from Alma Center, officiating, and burial was in the Houghtonburg cemetery. Many Friends assemble to pay the last fond tribute of affection to this beloved woman.

Near her childhood home she lies down to sleep and rest. Beautifully appropriate such a resting place, where he kindred sleep and where many of her lifelong friends remain to gather about the dear form with honest tears of bereavement, to lay her away tenderly in the narrow house with its curtains of fadeless green.

Mourning the death of a wife, mother, daughter, and sister, are a husband and three little ones, her father and mother, three sisters, Mrs. Ervin Pfaff, Bangor, Mrs. John Burnett, Hixton, Mrs. Henry Tande, Mt. Hope, and four brothers, Edwin, Merrillan, Albert, Delevan, Clarence and George.

Present at the burial services, besides the brothers and sisters who reside at other places, were Mrs. Henry Wells and Fred Stark, of Sparta; Henry Schlegel, of Wausau; Miss Lydia Schlegel, of Pennsylvania; Miss Alice Schlegel, of Pt. Edwards; Herman Schlegel, of La Crosse.

The sympathy of all is with those who are today bowed down in sorrow.
