Johnston, Myra E. (24 JUN 1853 - 27 AUG 1928)

Myra Elizabeth Spencer, youngest child of Alpheus and Polly Spencer, was born June 24, 1853, at Monroe, Green Co., Wis., and died at her home in Fairchild, Aug. 27, 1928, aged 75 years, 2 months and 5 days.

At the age of five years she came with her parents to Richland County, where they resided a short time, then coming to the town of Garden Valley, Jackson Co., in January 1862, where her parents took up a homestead, which was developed into the farm that has been most of the time her life-long home. April 13, 1875, she was united in marriage to David Johnston. They then took over the management of the farm, caring for the aged parents.

Two daughters blessed this union, who live to mourn her death, Mrs. Mamie Hobbs and Mrs. Olive Hobbs who were devoted to her to the last. Two grandsons, Wayne and Lloyd, and a niece, Victoria Ives of Oshkosh, were also with her at the closing scene.

An aged sister with her daughter, living at Great Falls, Mont., and a nephew at Spokane, Wash., are the only immediate living relatives. A brother, Jerome, died in the Civil War. Her husband preceded her to the Heavenly Home May 9, 1910.

Always a believer in God, she united with the Methodist Church in 1913. A loving wife and mother always ready to do for others in time of need. A patient sufferer to the last, has gone to reward, where she has met her loved ones gone before and is sweetly resting in the arms of her Savior.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Sept. 1st, at 1 o’clock, at the M.E. Church at Fairchild, Rev. Menger speaking comforting words, using for his text John 14:1.

Amid sorrowing relatives and friends she was laid to rest in the Curtis Cemetery, by the side of of her husband and parents.

Relatives and old friends from away to attend the funeral were: Mrs. Victoria A. Ives, Oshkosh; Mrs. Julia Syvertson, Melrose; Mrs. Lenna Raymond, Chippewa Falls, Mrs. Kate Cornwell, Mrs. Emil Luther, Greenwood; Mrs. O.E. Counsell, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Witkie, Neillsville; Mr. and Mrs. Sires and son, Mrs. J.L. Wright, Altoona.
