Baumgartner, Katharine (22 FEB 1845 - 29 JUN 1928)

Mrs. Katharine Baumgartner, oldest daughter of Jacob and Barbara Baumgartner, was born Feb. 22, 1845, in Engi, Canton Glarus, Switzerland, and passed away Friday, June 29, 1928, at the home of her son, Matt, at Humbird, Clark Co., Wis.

She grew to womanhood at her home in Engi, and on October 19, 1865, was united in marriage to Mathias Baumgartner, also of Engi. To this union were born six children, two of whom died in infancy.

She emigrated to America with her husband and family, on April 12, 1888, and settled near Wheatland, Iowa. Later the family moved to Renwick, Iowa. In the spring of 1906 they came to Wisconsin, settling in the village of Humbird. Following the death of her husband on July 29, 1922, she made her home with her youngest son, henry, on his farm south of Humbird. After the sudden death of this son on Dec. 28, 1926, she made her home with her son Matt, near the village, where she passed away after twelve weeks’ illness, at the age of 83 years, 4 months and 7 days.

At the age of sixteen, she was confirmed in the faith of the German Reformed Church, of which she was a faithful and devout member of the Frauen Verein of the local congregation and a devoted worker in all other interests of the church.

She leaves to mourn her death three children; one daughter, Mrs. Afra Gieger, New Liberty, Iowa; two sons, Jacob and Matt, both of Humbird; three sisters, all of Engi, Canton Glarus, Switzerland; nine grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and a host of relatives and friends.

Grandmother Baumgartner was throughout her life a kind and sympathetic neighbor and friend, a fine example of trust and patience in all tests of life, and a loving and devoted mother.

The funeral was held on Monday afternoon at St. John’s Church, Rev. E.F. Menger officiating, and was attended by a large congregation of friends and relatives. Burial was in Mentor Cemetery.

Out of town relatives of the deceased who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Hilarius Hammerly, Mrs. John Hammerly, Monticello; Prof. Fred hammerly, Logan, Utah; Jacob Hammerly and son, Gays Mills; Henry Hammerly, Cando, N.D.; Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Hoegger, Mr. and Mrs. John Baumgartner and son Walter, Colby; Mr. and Mrs. James Ritchie, Milwaukee; Mr. and Mrs. J.J. Baumgartner, Wis. Rapids.
