Szczech, Jerome "Jerry" M. (July 28, 1934 - November 20, 2002)

Jerome M "Jerry" Szczech, age 68, Wittenberg, died on Wednesday, November 20, 2002, at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield.

He was born on July 28, 1934 in Greenwood, WI, the son of Apolonia "Polly" (Badzinski) and the late Walter Szczech. On July 18, 1959, he was united in marriage to Carol Block in Milwaukee, WI.

Jerome graduated from Thorp High School in 1952, and served in the U. S. Army from 1954 to 1956. He worked at R. R. Donnelly Printing Co., Chicago, IL, then owned and operated Jerry’s Hardware Store, Wittenberg, from January 1973 until October 2001. Jerome was a member of the Holy Family Parish, Wittenberg, the Bloecher-Johnson American Legion Post #502, Wittenberg, The Wittenberg Lions Club, and Ducks Unlimited, Inc. He was named Wittenberg Chamber of Commerce Person of the Year 1997.

Survivors include his wife, Carol; son and daughter-in-law, Bruce and Sandra Szczech, Madison; daughter Janine Jorgensen, Madison; grandchildren: Bloythe and Brandon Jorgensen, Erika and Leah Szczech, his mother Apolonia Szczech, Thorp; brother, Daniel (Anne) Szczech, Greenwood; sister Marlene (Gerald) Vircks, Stevens Point; brother-in-law, Clarence Seichter, Cadott; brother-in-law, Norman (Shirley) Block, Clintonville; Ralph (Norma) Block, Milwaukee; Arvin (Karen) Block, Eagle; Roger (Donna) Block, Wausau; sister-in-law, Lucille (Alan) Nousen, Birnamwood; several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

He was preceded in death by his father, Walter Szczech; sister, Dolores Seichter; and grandniece, Kayla McConville.

The Funeral Mass was held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, November 25, 2002, at Holy Family/St. William Catholic Church, Wittenberg. The Rev. Faustin Misakabo, O. Praem officiated. Interment was in St. Paul Cemetery, Wittenberg. Friends called on Sunday from 4:00-8:00 p.m. at Schmidt-Schulta Funeral Home, Wittenberg, and at the church on Monday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services.

There was a Parish Wake Service on Sunday at the Funeral home. Military rites were conducted at the church by the American Legion. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Jerry’s name may be given to the Wittenberg Lions Club. The family will also establish a memorial in Jerry’s name at a later date.
