Hammond, Lewis Jess (2 June 1918 - 25 Feb 1939)

Lewis Jess Hammond, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hammond, passed away Saturday morning at 7:30, having reached the age of 20 years, 8 months and 23 days. Lewis was born at Niptoon, Wis., June 2, 1918, and with his parents moved to Clark County 18 years ago. Here he spent his boyhood days. He was attending the Granton Schools when his health failed and was welled liked by all who knew him and through his wonderful personality, won many friends.

Although he had been ill the past year and a half in the Madison Hospital, his sudden death was a great shock to the family and to the community. Four brothers preceded him in death: Henry, Earl, Burford, and Delbert. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hammond, five brothers: Albert of Madison, George of Loyal, Clarence, John, Fred, at home; two sisters, Mrs. Otto Slitten (Ruby) of Cashton, Mrs. Martin Garbisch (Ruth) of Granton. Besides his many relatives and friends.

He joined the church while at Madison. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Monday at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Rev. E. P. Stone officiating, and Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. at the Fancy Creek Presbyterian church. Interment was made in the Fancy Creek Cemetery.
