Howard H. Tompkins

Howard H Tompkins lived in New York State during the Civil War. He served in Co/Battery G of the 3rd NY Light Artillery with a rank of Private

BATTERY "G" 3rd REGIMENT LIGHT ARTILLERY. Organized from, Company "G" 19th Regiment Infantry. December 11, 1861. Attached to; Defenses of Washington, D. C., to March, 1862. Unattached, Dept. of North Carolina, to December, 1862. Artillery Brigade, Dept. of North Carolina, to January, 1863. Artillery Brigade, 18th Army Corps, Dept. of North Carolina, to April, 1863. Defenses of Now Berne, N. C., Dept. of North Carolina, to May, 1863.

SERVICE - Duty in the Defenses of Washington, D. C., till March, 1862. He sailed for New Berne, NC on March 27; arriving April 2, and duty there and at Washington, N. C., till May, 1863. Action at Washington, N. C., September 6, 1862. Siege of Washington March 30-April 20, 1863. Three years men transferred to Battery "K" May 22, 1863. He mustered out at Elmira, NY; June 2, 1863. A new Battery "G" organized February, 1864. He attached to Defenses of New Berne, N. C., Dept. of Virginia and North Carolina, to February, 1865. Artillery Division, District of Beaufort, N. C., Dept. of North Carolina, to April, 1865. Artillery Reserve, 23rd Army Corps, Dept. of North Carolina, to July, 1865.

SERVICE - Duty; New Berne, and other points in North Carolina; until March 1865. Campaign of the Carolinas, March 1 - April 26. Southwest Creek March 7. Battle of Kinston or Wise's Forks March 8-10. Occupation of Goldsboro March 21. Bennett's House April 26. Surrender of Johnston and his army. Duty; Dept. of North Carolina until June.

July 7, 1865 mustered out at Syracuse, NY.

When Howard Tompkins came to Clark Co., Wis., is not known for sure but this property sale record is recorded in 1889.

In the Thorp Courier [Thorp, Clark County, Wis.] of 23 Aug. 1889 it states that Howard H. Tompkins, last week, traded his farm nine miles south to L. O. Garrison for the Randall farm half mile north of town.

From the 1890 Special Schedule Census for Surviving Soldiers, Sailors and Marines and Widows he is shown as living in Withee, Township of Hixon, Clark Co., Wis., as follows:

In 1892 Howard Tompkins’ wife; Eliza (Coleman) Tompkins died at her home just north of Thorp. She died of typhoid pneumonia after an illness of eight days. She was 45 years old.

She was born in Sussex, England and came to Hamilton, NY with her parents when she was just six years old.

In Oct. of 1884 she married Howard H. Tompkins and they settled on a homestead in the town of Warner, Clark Co., Wis., where they resided until two years before her death.

In early life she became a member of the Baptist Church and after moving to Clark Co she became an active member of the Baptist Church, teaching Sunday school, and working in the ranks of the W.C.T.U.

Left to mourn her were her husband and son, two sisters, one living at Churchville and the other at Madison, NY, and a brother, George Coleman of Thorp.

Howard is again shown on the 1893 Roster of Clark Co., Wis., Veterans as having attended the second annual meeting of the Clark County Veterans Association in Thorp on June 8, 1893.

I could find no obit or burial records for him in Clark Co., Wis.
