100 Years Ago (1906)

H. J. Hawkins has purchased a hotel—The Mitchel—from H. W. Gibbs at Plainfield, last week. H. W. Gibbs purchased nine forties of land, lying in the Town of Worden from the Lusk-Peterson-Land Co. The purchase includes the old Jake Luecken farm. Consideration $8,000. Mr. Gibbs will move here in the near future and develop the property into an up-to-date farm.

Max Weber is making arrangements for building a handsome residence on his farm just west of the village limits.

Albert Rusch, numbered among the oldest settlers of the Town of Reseburg, died quite unexpectedly on Feb. 18, 1906.

The purest soap is Galvanic. It will wash the clothes clean in hot or cold water without hard rubbing.

Until further notice the Village Board of the Village of Thorp will pay $2.25 per cord for wood delivered at the Power House.

75 Years Ago (1931)

The store at Bellinger, owned by J. Malasius, was destroyed by fire on Sunday, February 15th.

Anton Swierkowski has been hired as manager of the Farmer Union Shipping Association in place of W. A. Wilhelm, resigned.

The illustrated Dairy Film shown at the Opera House on Friday afternoon last under the auspices of the New Richmond Mills was attended by a large number of farmers.

Rialto Theatre: Ralph Forbes in "Beau Ideal", Edmund Lowe and Constance Bennetss in "This Thing Called Love", Wm. Boyd in "The Painted Desert" and "The Passion Flower".

Rice, 4 pounds for 25¢; Raisins, 2 pounds for 19¢, oranges, one dozen 36¢.

50 Years Ago (1956)

February 26, Bishop H. Clifford Northcott of Madison, assisted by other ministers will consecrate the Thorp Methodist Church. This will be one of the greatest days in the history of this church. For never before has so much money been expended upon the building, for over $22,000 has been spent upon remodeling the premises.

Last Wednesday evening the union members at Foremost-Blue Moon plant here voted by a count of 48-15 to strike.

Don Osborne has changed over to Pure Oil. Formerly he carried Tydol products.

John Bielecki has purchased the stock, fixtures and building of the Red Owl Store from Ted Papierniak.

For the past six weeks the children of St. Hedwig’s have been busily preparing the operetta "Alice in Wonderland."

25 Years Ago (1981)

Nearly 70 students from the sixth, seventh and eighth grades of the Thorp public and Catholic schools entered Level I of the State Junior High Forensic competition in Augusta. In all, 57 students from the Thorp schools will advance to the Level II competition.

Preliminary figures were presented to the Thorp Board of Education for renovating the Thorp Elementary School building and according to the architects, a 100-percent upgrading of the building for long-term use is out of the question. For short-term use-10 to 15 years-renovation costs would approach $400,000.

10 Years Ago (1996)

Sixth grader Angie Lew won the local Peace Poster Contest sponsored by the Thorp Lioness Club.

Outstanding—Tremendous—are just two of the many words that could be used to describe the response to the Red Cross Bloodmobile visit in Thorp on February 20th. 148 people turned out donating 139 pints of blood putting the unit 24 pints over goal.
