Bio: Tischendorf, Otto (1867-1955)

Contact: Patty Polston

Otto Tischendorf was a native of Germany and was born July 2, 1867. He was a decendent of the scholar and professor, Lobegott Friedrich Constantin Tischendorf of the Leipzig University.

Otto' first wife, Agnes Taylor (***this is actually incorrect because Patty Polston says Otto's first wife, Agnes' maiden name was Doehler), died in 1918 and he took her sister, Mrs. Emma Hoffman, as his wife. Emma died in 1947. The widower and his son, Frank, continued to reside on the family farm which was later owned and operated by Donald Tischendorf until he took up a new residence on the Dorchester Corner.

The sons of Otto Tischendorf were: Edward, Fred, and Frank all of Dorchester, WI. He also had five daughters Mrs. Harold (Ida) Goodwin, Lamita, California; Mrs. Delmar (Frieda) Bell, Underwood, Iowa; Mrs. Molly Dauer, Chicago, Ill.; Mrs. James (Louise) Crandall, Cadott and (***Marie Louise Ellis).

Otto Tischendorf died about 6 O'Clock in the morning of Aug. 7, 1955 in the County Hospital at Wausau, Wisconsin after suffering from ill health for three to four years. After funeral services at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, he was buried in the Dorchester Memorial Cemetery. Loyal and Roy Crandall of Cadott served as pallbearers along with Frank Ellis and Lawrence Gohlinghorst of Tabor, Iowa; Keith Tischendorf of Colby and Albert Hoffman of Abbotsford, Wis. The funeral arrangements were made by the Fuchsgruber Funeral Service.

***Note: Patty Polston, a great granddaughter of Otto Tischendorf furnished the name of her grandmother, Marie Louise Ellis, and the correct name of Otto's first wife for the biographical sketch above.
