Engelking, Frederick (APR 1843 - JUN 1914)

Medford Star-News

"Frederick Engelking, one of Little Black, Taylor County, Wis. Civil War veterans, died suddenly while at church Sunday morning. He was born in Germany in April 1843, had come to America when a young man, residing first at Sheboygan. When eighteen he enlisted in the Union Army and served three years as corporal and sergeant, fought at Gettysburg and other big battles. On April 2, 1866 he married Miss Margaret Mais and soon after moved to Manitowoc Co. In 1878 he came to Taylor County, residing first at Westboro, later on the homestead near Gad, and for the past ten years or more at Little Black.

Ten children were born to him, six of whom, with Mrs. Engelking, survive him: Mrs. Jos. Lelte of Antigo, Mrs. C. Curran of Winnipeg, William of Prince Albert, Sask., Joseph of Duluth, Fred of Sanborn, and George of Minneapolis, also a sister, Mrs. Jurheide of Sheboygan. All attended the funeral except William. Others from away were C.C. Curran of Winnipeg, Mrs. Patrick Kinney of Minneapolis, Ed Nole and Adolph Jurheide, nephews of Sheboygan.

The funeral was held from the Lutheran Church at Little Black yesterday afternoon, Rev. M.J. Hillemann officiating. He served his country faithfully and was just as faithful and honorable with his fellowmen."

The widow of the deceased is a sister of Stephen Mais of this city (Colby, Clark Co., Wis.). Mr. and Mrs. Mais and son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Frome, drove up Friday to attend the funeral. Interment was in the cemetery east of Medford.
