My father Bernard D. Slota, was born, Oct.13, 1917, in Duluth, MN to Bernard Louis Slota of Thorp and Victoria (Mohr) Slota.  They lived in the Morgan Park area while my grandfather worked at United Nickel.  In 1927, my grandfather and his brother (John, of Thorp, Wis), bought the Gilman State.

Bernard D. Slota graduated from Gilman High School and attended Dental school at Marquette University graduating in 1942.  He served in WW II as a captain in the 34th Engineer Combat Regiment.

They were in the Battle of the Bulge and met the Russians at the Elbe. They as a unit had enough combat points to be brought home in October of 1945.  He was given a commission in the United States Army as a 1st Lieutenant in the Dental Corp. He landed on Omaha Beach in one of the first waves and was one of six dentists that participated in the Normandy invasion.  He was attached to combat engineers and crossed the Elbe with the 82nd Airborne and liberated a concentration camp at Ludwigslust Germany of the greater metropolitan region of Hamburg, a central castle town of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

He returned to Wisconsin in December of 1945 with his new wife and started a dental practice in January of 1946. They together raised 5 children. He served as a Scoutmaster for the local Boy Scout Troop, served president of Victory Memorial Hospital, president of the local Lions Club and was a 3rd degree member of the Knights of Columbus at his local parish, St. Bernard's.

He died July 19, 1970.  He and his wife Lenore (Moore) Slota are buried in the Thorp Catholic cemetery.
