Baldischwiler, Walter K. (11 JUL 1920 - 20 MAR 2006)

Walter K. Baldeschwiler, 85, Stevens Point, died Monday, March 20, 2006, at the Portage County Health Care Center. A memorial service will be held in Thorp at a later date.

Walter K. Baldeschwiler was born July 11, 1920 in Germany, to Karl and Anna (nee Rogg) Baldeschwiler. He immigrated to the United States through Ellis Island with his family in 1925. The family settled in Thorp, being sponsored by family members. He attended grade school in Thorp, then attended St. John’s Preparatory School in Collegeville, Minn. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corp in 1942 and served until being honorably discharged in 1946. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1950, with a bachelor of science degree in food technology. He married Gertrude Kulig in 1946, in Madison. The couple moved to Green Bay where he began his career in food technology at Woody’s Cheese. He worked for Foremost Inc., Thorp, and then at Green County Pre-Pack, Monroe. In 1965, He became the production manager at Land O’ Lakes, Inc.-Cheese Division, Spencer, until his retirement in 1984. He enjoyed gardening, reading, traveling and watching sports.

Survivors include his wife, Gertrude, Stevens Point; one daughter, Lyn (James) Dodson, Menomonee Falls, and their children, Erin and Courtney; and one son, Tom (Susan) Baldischwiler, Stevens Point, and their children, Amanda and Libby; and one sister, Hildegarde Radtke, Eau Claire. Preceding him in death was one brother, Max.
