Peter Schafer died at the home of his son, John Schafer, in this village, last Sunday evening, after a long illness with Bright’s disease. He was 82 years, 1 month and 19 days of age, being one of the oldest residents of this village and the oldest Civil War veteran of this Post. In the Civil War he enlisted under General Dudley.

Mr. Schafer was born on March 22, 1831, at Rimbach, County of Heppenheim, Hessen Darmstadt. He came to this county in 1851, locating at Rome, N.Y. He lived at Rome two years and a half, where he married his first wife, Elizabeth Giebel. In 1854 he moved to Dale, Wis. With his first wife. He had ten children, of which three sons and three daughters are dead. His wife died in 1870 and in 1871 he married his second wife, Katherine Giebel. With this wife he had three children, all of whom died in infancy. He moved to Dorchester in 1884, his second wife dying in 1893.

The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon from St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Rev. F.H. Moecker conducting the funeral service services. He leaves to mourn his death, three sons, three daughters, thirty-three grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
