Stecker, Fred (27 MAY 1858 - 9 JUN 1906)

Fred Stecker died at his home in the town of Colby, Clark Co., Wis., Saturday, June 9, 1906, of tuberculosis of the bone, after an illness of about four years, the past year being unable to do work of any kind.

Deceased was born in Sheboygan, May 27t, 1858, and came to Colby in 1879. In 1884 he was married to Miss Barbara Glenzer, who with five children, Freddie, Herbert, Levy, Willie and Edna, survive him and mourn the loss of a kind and loving husband and father; he also leaves to mourn his early death, a mother, Mrs. Sophie Stecker of Madison; four brothers, John of Sheboygan, August of Marshfield, William of Iona, Wash., and Hubert of Madison, and three sisters, Mrs. Joe Wilck of Farmville, Va., Mrs. Elmer Balheim of Colby, and Miss Lena Stecker of Madison.

During his 27 years residence in Colby Fred was always prominent in the affairs of the town, having been elected assessor many times and chairman twice. He resigned from the chairmanship in the early part of 1905 on account of his health. Mr. Stecker was a good citizen and no man in the town was more popular than he. Naturally conservative, his conduct in public office was for the best interests of the people he served, and no man more jealously guarded their rights. All the elements of his character were such as to make him highly respected by all who knew him. He was a member of the Colby Lodge No. 46, O.D.H.S., which order attended his funeral in a body.

The news of his death was received with extreme sorrow by his friends and associates, who now tender their heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family and relatives.

The funeral, which was a very large one, was held from the residence Wednesday, conducted by Rev. Witschanke and the remains laid at rest in Green Grove Cemetery.
