Ethel May Schutte, age 87, N1073 Highway 95, Neillsville, died at 2:50 p.m. Tuesday, January 20, 1998 at home.

Ethel was born September 14, 1910 to James DeRoy and Jane (Lightfoot) Durst in Fairchild. She was married to Alvin C Schutte on June 26, 1935 at St. John’s Parsonage, Neillsville, Wis. They celebrated their 62nd anniversary in June. She received her education at Humbird and Fairchild schools, graduating from Fairchild High School, then Eau Claire Normal School. She taught school before her marriage. After her marriage she and her husband farmed in the Town of Levis. Ethel loved and enjoyed her children and grandchildren, crocheting and making quilts and wall hangings for her family.

Ethel was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and its Ladies Aid. She was also a member of the Happy Homemakers Club for over 50 years.

Surviving is her husband; three sons, Don (Evelyn), Neillsville; Marvin (Marie), Elk Mound; Daryl (Nancy) Beloit; three daughters, Janice (Rolland) Stenulson, Beloit; Dianne Buettner, Neillsville; Joanne St. John, Port Edwards; 25 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren; four brothers, Virgil Durst, Independence, MO, James (Martha) Durst and Ivan (Gertrude) Durst of Neillsville and Raymond (Dorthea) Durst of Fairchild; six sisters, Dorothy Sieg, Fairchild, Eva (William) Kurasz, Neillsville, Leone Scholze, and Betty Marg of Black River Falls, Vivian Schutte, Neillsville, Ella Jean (Clarence) Scholze, Rudolph.

Preceding her in death were her parents and one brother, Neil.

Services were held at 1:30 p.m. Friday January 20, 1998 at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Neillsville with the Rev. Timothy Biebert officiating. Music was provided by the St. John’s Jr. Choir and also with congregational singing accompanied by Becky Lange, organist.

Pallbearers were Robert and Norman Schutte, Jeff Kuhle, Frank St. John, Bill Buettner and Richard Stenulson.

Buchanan Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
