Sommer, Ida (29 APR 1881 - 11 OCT 1904)

On Tuesday, Mrs. Arthur Sommer, accompanied by two boys, started in a rig from her home in the town of Reseburg, Clark Co., Wis., for her home in the town of Green Grove, Clark Co. Immediately after crossing Black River bridge in the town of Longwood the overflowing banks of the river from recent rains had covered the roadway to a great depth with water, and the team became unmanageable. Mrs. Sommer was thrown from the carriage into the swift stream and was drowned. The boys escaped from the raging torrent. Up to this writing the body has not been recovered. Mrs. Sommer was the wife of Arthur Sommer, the cheesemaker at the Reseburg Factory, the couple having been married but a few months ago. A large crew is searching for the remains.

Death is everywhere, above, beneath, within and, in fact all around, yes, we are also death. With the death of the birdsong and fading of the flowers, another life has passed away. How true, death is sad, sad when it comes to the little one in the cradle though unconscious of sorrow or pain, sad when it comes to the aged one bowed down with the weight of years, and doubly so when it claims for its own one just in the bloom of youth.

Last Tuesday, Oct. 11, 1904, suddenly and without warning the young wife of Arthur Sommers was taken from our midst. While crossing Black River with her husband’s two cousins, Theodore and August Sommers, on her way to her parents’ home, by some side step of the horses, carriage and occupants were thrown into the river. The boys managed to cling to the horses and escaped, while Mrs. Sommers drowned. Search was at once begun and the next day the body was recovered. The remains were at once taken to the home of her parents at Green Grove, and Friday was laid to rest in the Green Grove Cemetery in the presence of people from all over the county, who came to pay their last tribute of love and respect to the dead.

Mrs. Arthur Sommers was formerly Ida Meyers, oldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Meyers. She was born at Green Grove, April 29, 1881, and mad that place her home up to the time of her marriage, when she resided at Reseburg.

Her marriage took place May 28, 1904, at her home in Green Grove in the presence of about three hundred guests.

Her death makes it doubly sad being only a bride of four months, in the bloom of youth and everything to live for. She was a woman of excellent character, lovable disposition and beloved by all who made her acquaintance. She leaves to mourn her death her young husband, father, mother, eight sisters and one brother, who are stricken with grief at her sudden death.

The bereaved ones have the sympathy of the entire community.
