Hugoboom, Martha (14 FEB 1835 - 16 JAN 1898)

Of the late wife of Hosea Hugoboom of Dorchester, Clark Co., Wis.:

Martha Uales was born in Suffolk Co., Engl., on Feb. 14th, 1835; came to America with her parents, brothers and sisters, and settled at Waupaca, Wis., May 30th, 1856; on May 9th, 1869, she was united in marriage with Hosea Hugoboom, and removed to Hancock where they resided for seven years, then came to Clark County, locating in the town of Mayville, and a few years ago moved into the village of Dorchester, where they have since resided, respected and loved by all. She was the mother of five children, three of a former marriage with Wm. Kliss, and two as the result of her union with Mr. Hugoboom. Of these but two are living, Wm. Kliss of Oshkosh, and Maud E. Hugoboom of Pine, Ore.; the others, Carrie E. Kliss died Dec. 5th, 1873, Mary Hugoboom died March 20th, 1879, Frank Kliss perished at the time of the Phillips fire. Besides the two children living, she leaves to mourn her, the husband, to whom she had always been a devoted helpmeet, one brother and three sisters residing at Waupaca and one brother at Hancock. While Mrs Hugoboom did not affiliate with any particular church, yet she was a Christian woman and lived with a strong faith in the Saving Grace, and her last audible words as she fell in that long, las sleep were these:

"Gentler Jesus, meek and mild,

Look upon a little child."

Her funeral, which was one of the largest ever held in the village of Dorchester, occurred on Wednesday, Jan. 19th, and was conducted by Rev. S.A. Hoffman of this city.
