Woock, Minnie (Grantor)

Real Estate Transfer: Minnie Woock to Grant Hopkins, Aug. 5, 1901. lot 20, blk. 3, Woock's add. to village of Abbotsford, 75.

Woock opera house

When a storm moved the Woock opera house, located in Hutman tin shop off its foundation, Ade Young bought it and moved it to the location where the Abby Theatre is.  Here it served many purposes. A stage was erected and the building was used for dancing, roller-skating, basketball, and housing show troops. Later it was sold to Ira Hawks. It-was the home of the first movies, with Martin Rilling operating the first silent pictures. The building burned and Ira Hawks did not rebuild it.

Application for the corporation of the village of Abbotsford was made June 13, 1894, the signers of the petition being: R. C. Tennant, N. E. Denny, John A. Olson, W. W. Denny, John Greve, Paul Woock, Isaac Nelson, Edward Grenem, Gullick Olson, August J. Meyers, Hugh Traverse and John P. Olson. The April 23, 1894 census, showed a population of 362. The charter election was held at Paul Woock’s Hall, July 7, 1894 with sixty votes being cast, with only one negative.

Three building lots, in Abbotsford, have been purchased by Mr. and Mrs. Loys Buell from Mr. and Mrs. Louis Mauritz for $400. Described as lots 15, 16 and 17 of Woock’s second addition, the lots are located on the south side of McKinley Street, half a block west of Walnut Street. May 1952

*1923 was a dangerous year in the woods if you were in Eatonville, WA.  There were nine deaths and two serious injuries to Eatonville loggers. There could have been more, but those were the ones reported at the Eatonville hospitals. A. W. Bridge Hospital, 1920, located across the street from High School on Mashell Ave.  The only saving grace was that Eatonville did have medical facilities. This picture was taken in 1920 outside the hospital (now a residence on the corner across from the Eatonville High School). Paul Woock of Ashford and Harry Howell were killed in September. It’s believed they were cutting down a tree and got in line with the haul-back line.
