Emma Priebe was born in the spring of 1867 in Golumbia Moglino Poseu, Germany*. She married Theodore Hummel, a native son of Obhausen, Sachsen, Germany, in Wenona, Marshall Co., Illinois, 23 Jul 1891. A new coal mine had just opened in Wenona and many immigrants found work in the bustling town. Both Emma and her husband Theodore Sr. were bakers. They became the parents of a dozen children: Bertha, Clara, Ernest (died as a 2 mo. old infant), Ted, Bill, Emma (their Christmas baby, died at the age of three), Dorothy, Art, Margaret, Henry and Fred. Following the birth of their eleventh child and youngest son Fred in 1905, the family was split by divorce and a prison term at the Wisconsin State Correctional Institute in Waupun, Wisconsin for Theodore. Emma and her children began a new life in Santa Barbara, CA where she opened her own bakery and later enlarged it into a full grocery store. On the 1920 Census, she was listed as "widowed" . Ted's 1923 passport listed his father's residence as "unknown" which seems to indicate the family had little or no contact with Theodore Sr. after his prison term. Most certainly that would have been a far greater punishment than the time he spent behind bars.

Emma passed away Oct. 18, 1929, in Santa Barbara, California at the age of 62. What a strong and brave women she must have been. Nearly ten years later, Aug. 9, 1939, Theodore also died in California at the age of 80.

*Kreis Mogilno (Emma Priebe's birthplace) was one of many Kreise (counties) in the northern administrative district of Bromberg, in the Prussian province of Posen. Emma immigrated to the United States in 1886, the same year the Statue of Liberty was dedicated. She was just 17 yrs. old.

A sand accident happened in one neighborhood last Saturday night (14 Sep 1901). A family by the name of Humel (Hummel) coming from Ft. Atkinson have bought and moved onto the *Bill Ransom place and Saturday afternoon their little girl, about 4 years old, go hold of a box of headache tablets and ate them, dying about dark. They did know the cause until the next morning. The funeral services were held yesterday afternoon (19 Sep 1901) at the house conducted by the Lutheran preacher from Neillsville.

*In 1881, Mr. and Mrs. William Ransom's daughter, Estella, had died at this same farm and just two months after Emma Hummel died in 1901, the death of the Ransom's son, Faye, was reported.
