Becken, Halver Sr. (28 Dec. 1891 - 7 Oct. 1972)

Colby - Halver Becken Sr., 515 N. Second St., Colby, died early Saturday morning at his home, following a heart attack. He was 81years of age. Services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Lulloff Funeral Home in Colby.

The Rev. David T. Pankow, pastor of Zion Lutheran Church in Colby, will officiate and burial will be made in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Cemetery in the town of Green Grove, where graveside military rites will be conducted.

Friends may call at the Lulloff Funeral Home in Colby.

Mr. Becken was born Dec. 28, 1891, in the town of Midway, and was educated near Curtiss, Wis. He had lived and worked in North Dakota and Owen prior to his marriage June 25, 1919, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Green Grove, to the former Meta Miller, who survives him. He also served with the U. S. Army during World War I.

After his marriage he farmed in the town of Green Grove for 28 years, and in 1947 he moved to Colby where he had been employed by a cheese box manufacturing firm until his retirement in 1958.

He was an avid outdoor sportsman and an enthusiastic traveler who had visited every state in the union. The Beckens were honored on their 50th wedding anniversary in June of 1969.

He served on the Atwood School board for 15 years, was school treasurer for the Atwood School District for nine years, and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2227 in Colby.

Other survivors include a son, Halver Becken Jr. of Milwaukee; six daughters, Mrs. Louis (LaMyra) Weinfurtner, Mrs. LaVern (Joyce) Kauffman and Mrs. Ward (Jacinta) Fredrickson, all of Marshfield; Mrs. Morris (Gloria) Bedrosian, Gurnee, Ill., Mrs. Gordon (Darlene) Schjoneman, Coos Bay, Ore.; and Mrs. Russell (June) Decker, Caledonia; 21 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and one brother, Thorval Becken of River Falls.

Two sons, two brothers and a sister preceded him in death.
