Veurink, Garret (26 Jan 1864 - 23 Jan 1947)

Garret Veurink, a resident of the Withee, Clark County, Wis. community for 48 years, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Olson at Superior, Thursday, Jan. 23, 1947. He was 83 years old when he succumbed to a lingering illness caused by a stroke, which he suffered on Jan. 17, 1945.

Funeral services were conducted Monday, Jan. 27th, from the Griebenow Funeral Home, with Rev. Walter E. Schedler of Withee officiating. Burial was made in Riverside Cemetery.

He was born on Jan. 26, 1864 at Amsterdam, Holland, coming to this country as a youth when 17 years of age. For 18 years he made his home at Sheboygan, before moving to Withee in 1899, settling on a farm, making that his occupation up until 10 years ago, at which time he retired and made his home with his son William. Garret Veurink was a successful farmer, in addition to being a respected citizen of the community. A follower of the Christian faith he was a pioneer member of the Congregational Church at Wolters' corners.

A little more than two years ago, on Jan. 15, 1945, he became less active as he suffered a stroke, and from that time until Oct. 1946 was hospitalized. Later he went to Superior to live with a daughter, where he took seriously ill on Wednesday and passed away the following day.

Surviving him are a sister, Mrs. Herman Mattsch, Milwaukee, one son, William, Withee, and one daughter, Mrs. Fred (Leona) Olson, Superior, a great-granddaughter, Patricia Ann Bruchert, two granddaughters, Mrs. Norbert Bruchert and Mary Jo Olson, and grandsons, Lloyd, a serviceman stationed at Boston, who was home for the services, and Kenneth of Superior.

His wife, the former Mary Verhulst, whom he married on Nov. 17, 1897 at Sheboygan, preceded him in death, having passed away in May 1923.

Pallbearers at the final rites were George Vollrath, Wm. Haas, Nick Mertens, Wm. Brandt, Alvin Thorson and Ed Prock.
