Dzienkowski, John L. April 29, 1923 - April 6, 2002

John L. Dzienkowski, 78, of Boyd passed away Saturday evening at Victory Memorial Center in Stanley. John was born on April 29, 1923 in Edson, the son of John and Anna Dzienkowski. He went to school through the eighth grade. In October 1942, at the age of 17, he entered the U.S. Marine Corps and served his country in the South Pacific during World War II until January 1946.

Upon return from service, John became a long and established member of the American Legion Post 326 in Boyd and was the Legion’s first 50-year member. He was also VFW and DAV member. From 1946 - 48, John worked in the steel mills of Milwaukee and traveled west before returning to Wisconsin.

John married Lucille (Toots) Lorenz at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Edson on May 31, 1949 and together they began farming in Edson between the years of 1949 and 1955. In 1955 John and Toots purchased the family farm in Boyd on Highway Z where they settled and farmed from May 1955 to August 1984. John and Toots retired in 1984 and moved to their current home in Boyd, where John enjoyed retirement and continued to collaborate on farm issues with his son, Daniel, who assumed responsibility of the family farm.

John instilled a strong sense of community and country in his family and greatly loved for many things, especially his strong will, charming wit and his clever and playful turns of phrase.

John is survived by his wife, Lucille; two sons, Larry (Barb) Dzienkowski of Anchorage, Alaska and Daniel (Bev) Dzienkowski of Boyd; five daughters June (Scott) Hootman of Eau Claire, Roxi (Andy) Bourget of Fall Creek, Rene (Rohit) Katiak of Silver Springs, Md., Karen Dzienkowski of San Francisco, Calif, and Tami (Bob) Stubbe or Oregon; eight grandchildren: a brother, Sylvester (Rose) Dzienkowski of Cadott; and four sisters, Marcella Jankowski of Milwaukee, Evelyn (William) Projieck of Menomonee Falls, Mary Ann Drace of Altoona and Bernadette (Nilus) Wilkom of Grafton.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his son Rolly; and his three brothers, Frank, Edward and Leo Dzienkowski. Services were held on April 9 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Boyd. Father Robert Nelson officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery. Family members served as pallbearers. Boyd American Legion Walter Nelson Post 326 provided military graveside rites.
