Berken, Peter (30 MAR 1874 - 26 Jan 1929)

This community was shocked Saturday evening, when it learned that Peter Berken had suddenly passed away at his home, following a heart attack, which he suffered shortly before seven o'clock. He had just finished eating supper, and not feeling well had lain down to rest, and within a period of only a few minutes had slept away.

Mr. Berken was born at De Pere, Wis. and was married Sept. 17, 1899 to Miss Emma Neitzel at Glenwood City, Wis. To this union two children were born, Walter Berken and Miss Edna Berken, both of whom reside at home. In 1907 Mr. Berken came to Owen, Clark County, Wis. and became an employee of the John S. Owen Lumber Co., and when the box factory was built he became an employee of the Owen Box and Crating Co., in whose employ he remained until the time of his death. He was a steady worker and for years held the position as foreman of the plant.

He was a member of the local order of Knights of Pythias, and a member of the Modern Woodman of Withee. As a good citizen, few were his equal, for he was liked by all who were fortunate enough to have known him. He was a friend of the children and always ready to help a good cause along. He will be missed in the community and by his fellow workmen, as well as those near and dear to him.

Funeral services were conducted from the home Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock, Rev. W. P. Powell, pastor of the Congregational Church, officiating, and burial took place in Riverside Cemetery.

Besides his wife and two children, he leaves to mourn, five sisters, Mrs. Hans Anderson, Mrs. Harry Van Ryn and Mrs. Wm. Schorn, St. Paul; Mrs. Mike Bredel, West De Pere; and Mrs. Frank Obermueller, Glenwood City; and one brother, John Berken, St. Paul, all of who came to attend the funeral.
