Shortell, Richard (10 OCT 1844 - 31 Jul 1927)

Richard Shortell, one of the old pioneers of Colby, Wis., passed to the great beyond last Sunday evening, July 31, 1927, heart trouble being the cause of his departure. Funeral services were held this Thursday morning at the St. Mary's Catholic Church, Rev. Lachnit officiating, and interment made in the Colby Catholic Cemetery.

The deceased was born in Ireland Oct. 10, 1844, thus reaching the age of 82 years, 9 months and 21 days. He moved to Auburndale, Wis. in 1878, and, in 1879, came to Colby and engaged in the farming business. He was married to Lucy Adrian in 1877 at Freedom, Wis. To this union, one son, George Shortell of Colby, Wis., was born. His wife passed away several years ago.

Besides his son, his demise is mourned by one stepson, Peter Adrian, Fond du Lac; three stepdaughters, Mrs. Minnie Ristau, Kaukauna; Mrs. J. P. Wolf, Ashland, Oregon; and Mrs. Henry Eder, Colby.

He was a man of generous impulses and never forgot the hospitable ways of the pioneer. He had filled the various relations of life, as son, husband, father, brother, friend, and filled them well. Who can do more? But he is gone and another name is stricken from the ever lessening roll of our early settlers.
