Drowned

Thomas Murphey, a young man employed on the upper Eat Fork drive was drowned last Saturday, April 21. He, in company with two men, had been engaged in driving logs on flood water, and the water having left them they started to go below where they could be of more service. To avoid "tramping" the banks, three of them got on a couple of logs which they held together in some way, and started to ride down to a jam just below. At Wetestein Rapids the logs struck a rock and two out the three were thrown into the water. Murphey being of that number and unable to swim was drowned. Immediate search was made for his body, and it was recovered within a short distance of where he went down, within a half an hour after he was drowned. Every know effort to resuscitate the body was attempted, but to no effect, and on Sunday his remains were brought to this city and buried from the Catholic church, of which he was a member, on Monday. The deceased is said to have been a man of sterling qualities. He was a resident of Canada, coming from there last fall. His only relatives here, so far as we have been able to learn, are Pete and Michael Murphey who have been residents of this county for several years.
