Paul, Rev. J. H. (1874 - 1 Feb 1920)

Rev. J. H. Paul, former pastor of the M. E. Church in this city (Colby, Wis.), and one of the best known members in the conference, died Sunday at Cornell, of pneumonia, following an attack of influenza.

Rev. Paul was born in Ontario, Canada, in 1874. He came to Wisconsin in 1897 and took up the work of the Christian ministry, uniting with the Wisconsin Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church and served the Methodist Churches of Kaukauna, Fond du Lac, Green Bay and Wesley Ave., Milwaukee. He was formerly connected with the Methodist hospital at Green Bay and served four years as its financial agent. He then united with the West Wisconsin Conference. He was a graduate of Lawrence College.

Because of failing health he went to Kansas a few years ago, after which he returned to Wisconsin determined to regain his health in active work out of doors. He settled at Rib Lake and worked in the woods on his land and in time his general health and strength improved to such an extent that he could not resist the appeals which came to him to preach the message of his Master.

His peculiar ability as an evangelistic pastor made him a force wherever he went. Many changes in this locality testify to his power in winding people to serve their Master. The Colby and Unity charge was doubly blessed in that it enjoyed his services not only as evangelist, but also as pastor for more than a year and a half.

His work this year has been crowned with exceptional glories as district evangelist. God has used him in a most marvelous manner in bringing men and women into a knowledge and fellowship with Christ and to the Church. Since the first of October he has held five revivals and was at Cornell beginning the sixth revival when he was stricken with pneumonia and died Sunday, Feb. 1, 1920.

The body was taken to this home in Marshfield on Tuesday and the funeral services were held this (Thursday) afternoon, at 3 p.m., from the Methodist Church with District Superintendent, Rev. J. W. Irish, officiating. A large number of brother pastors attended these last sad rites of their brother and co-laborer.

Rev. Paul is survived by his widow and sons, Olin and Norman, and daughter Elaine and his mother and other relatives who reside in Canada.
