Willis, Lafayette M. (6 Mar 1856 - 4 OCT 1916)

Lafayette Milton Willis, son of Daniel and Henriette Willis, was born in New York City March 6, 1856. He was the last of is family, his parents and only brother all preceding him in death.

He came to Clark County in 1880 and settled on a farm three miles east of the village (Loyal, Clark County, Wis.), where he resided for many years. He was married to May Reed at Lowell, Dodge Co. in 1875 and to this union were born eight children, Josephine, Clara, Edward of Seattle, Wash., James, Grace and Albert of Fargo, N.D., Charles R. of Minoqua, Wis., and Jessie who died in infancy. His wife died in August 1897.

He was married Nov. 21, 1903 to Mrs. Mary Boyer at Rhinelander, Wis. About seven years ago he received sunstroke while digging potatoes for a neighbor, never recovering from its effects, he gradually failed until death came to his relief Oct. 4, 1916.

Mr. Willis was converted a number of years ago and became an earnest church worker and united with the Congregational Church eight years ago, of which he was a faithful and consistent member. Of him it May be said that he was a man of clean character and lead an honest hard working life, and while he possessed but little of this world's goods, he could lay claim to a good name, of which his family relations and posterity can justly be proud.

Possessed of a good education he was a constant reader of the best of literature. He was a deep thinker, a poet and an interesting conversationalist, of a retiring disposition he made but few friends, but those he did make were lasting and will readily speak of the manly qualities of the man.

The funeral was held from the Methodist Church at Loyal on Oct. 6th, Rev. W. C. Clock officiating. Interment was in the Loyal Cemetery.
