Leonard, Henry L. (30 MAY 1828 - 18 MAY 1910)
Died, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Byron Stevens, at Spokeville, Clark County, Wis., on Wednesday, May 18, 1910, at half past five in the morning, Henry L. Leonard at the age of 81 years, 11 months and 19 days.
He was born in Buckland, Mass. He came to Wisconsin when seventeen years of age with his parents and settled on a farm in the town of Ashippum, Dodge Co., Wis. He went to Peshtigo when thirty-two years of age, where he worked until Oct. 17, 1861, when he enlisted in the army and was honorably discharged on Dec. 28, 1864. He was married to Miss Ella Collins on July 4, 1865, and came to Clark County, Wis. thirty-six years ago and settled on a farm in the town of Fremont, where he lived for twenty-six years and then moved to Spokeville. Last January he went to live with his daughter, where he died.
He was sick only one week before he died. Another name is stricken from the ever-lessening roll of our old soldiers who served their country faithfully. Not for him be our tears! Brother let us crown his grave with garlands; few will live as long or as well, and fewer yet will the Angel of Death greet with such a loving touch.
He leaves to mourn his loss one son, George Leonard of Hugo, Col., and one daughter, Mrs. Byron Stevens of Spokeville.
The funeral services were held on May 20th at the Spokeville Church and the remains buried in the Cole Cemetery in the town of Sherman.
