Obituary of Ben Stanley

On Thursday, May 26, 1937, the angel of death visited our community and took from our midst Ben Stanley. It came as a shock to the entire commuity showing us all how uncertain life is.

Mr. Stanley was born in Princeton Minnesota, May 4, 1874. He came to Clark County while a young man and bought a farm in the Town of Eaton which has since been his home. He passed away May 26, 1937 at the Marshfield hospital after a lingering illness.

He was married to Sylvian Christie at Neillsville, April 1, 1901, by Rev. Longenecker. There were three children born to this union, Merrill of Chetek, Wis., Leo at home, Lucille (Mrs. Joe Lunka) of Willard, Wis.

He leaves to mourn his loss his wife, three children, two sisters, Mrs. Mary Bostwick, Greenwood, Wis., Mrs. Leonra Dohquist, Wolf Point, Montana, one brother Lawrence and four grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted at the home on Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock with the Rev. G. W. Longenecker officiating and the body was laid to rest in the Greenwood cemetery. The Modern Woodman of America, of which he was a member, acted as pallbearers and conducted the rites at the cemetry.

The pallbearers were Ed Buker, C.A. Varney, Adolph Meyer, Elmer Johnson, C.A. Mason and E.T. Opdycke.

The following from away were here to attend the funeral service; Mr. and Mrs. Merrill Stanley and Mr. Milo Tillur of Chetek, Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Iffland, Merrillan; Mr. and Mrs. Emery Stark, Stanley; Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Bostwick, Alma Center; Calvin Mills and wife of Neillsville; Mr. and Mrs. Ed Tucker and Mr. and Mrs. Albert Neiss of Lodi.

Ther's a lonely grave on the hillside, O'er which has no blossoms yet blown Upon it the first grass is growing And around it the spring breezes moan Oh hearts that are empty and aching Husband and Father that under the sod Hold fast to these sweet words of comfort 'Of such is the Kingdom of God'
