The splendid country through which we passed on the way led us to expect that the village was pleasantly situated, but Greenwood and its surrounding far exceeded our most favorable expectation. It is far more of a town than we expected to find, and is of much greater importance as a business point. There are quite a number of business houses, and all appears to be doing an extensive trade, for a point so recently established. Chandler & Brown, general merchants, are the pioneers, and are now building an addition to their store building, which, where completed, will make it full as large as any store-room in Neillsville. The Eaton Bros. have a full and well selected stock of hardware, in which they are doing a good trade. Dr. Thomas is the proprietor of about as tasty a little drug-store as it was ever our lot to see, and is meeting with success in dealing in that line. Mr. H. M. Weston, well known in Neillsville, has opened out a full and complete stock of dry goods, groceries and general merchandise in a building recently fitted up near the pioneer store of Chandler & Brown. Mr. Weston’s goods being new, were, of course, desirable, and having been bought when goods were at bottom figures in the market he was enabled to offer better bargains than were ever before given in Greenwood, in consequences of which he has done an enormous trade in the short time he has been in business at that point. Aside from those mentioned there are several other places of business, one of which - a harness shop- is carried on by P. M. Stevens, formerly of this place. "Pete," as we used to call him, is doing well, and appears to be contented with his new location. We regret that we have not the space to give the place the notice it deserves, but hope to be able to do so at some future time. We also regret that we are not permitted to relate what we saw and heard during a short call at the residence of Geo. W. Hubbell, who, by the way, though a staunch Republican, is anxious to change his name to Gunder. W. Hubbleson and run for Governor on the temperance ticket.
