A life convict in the State Prison, named James H. Carter, sent up for murder seven years ago, was pardoned this week by Gov. Taylor, his innocence of the crime having at last been established. The murder of which he was convicted was committed by the wife of the victim, in a fit of passion, Carter being present. Through threats of charging the murder upon him, she compelled him to assist her in hiding the body and otherwise laying himself open to suspicion with her. Both were arrested, and instead of her clearing him, she and her counsel induced him to confess the crime as his own, promising secure his pardon after conviction. He at last yielded, but both were convicted. The woman was afterwards released upon a writ of error based upon some technicality. Full proofs of these facts has at last been established, and Carter, who is now 26 years old, is restored to liberty.
