Insane Last Tuesday, Mr. John R. Cowdry, Chairman of the Town Board of the Town of Perkins, brought a crazy woman, the wife of a German, named Gottlieb Stange (Fiedrika Faatz / Foatz Stange), to this place for medical examination, preparatory to having her admitted to the Insane Asylum at Oahkosh. The examination conducted by Drs. Lacey and Crandall took place on Monday, establishing the fact of her insanity, and she will be taken to that asylum as soon as an order for the same can be obtained from the proper authorities. Usually, the unfortunate woman is quite harmless, but at times she becomes quite desperate and attempts to take the lives of her children, who she disowns, as she does her husband, claiming that they belong to her brother in Germany. A few days ago she attempted to burn one of her children to death by holding it on the stove. The child was rescued, but not until she had succeeded in burning it severely. The man, she is apparently industrious, is a poor "homesteader,: and the town in which he lives has been obliged to provide for his family since his wife became deranged.

*The Town of Perkins was the former name of the Town of Sherwood Forest, later Sherwood. Gottlieb Stange was the father of Carl T. Stange. We believe the child who was burned May have been Lucas Stange who is buried in Town of Grant Cemetery -- Stange, Gottlieb 1826 - 1880; Stange, Lucas 1864 - 1876

----Source: *The facts in this obit have not been confirmed.  It was compiled from family resources found on this site and the news article above.

Lucas was the son of German born parents, Fredrika Faatz & Gottfried Stange, who immigrated from Milo, Uckermarkt, Germany in 1866 when Lucas was 2 years old. They settled at Iron Ridge, Dodge Co., Wisconsin, where they lived for six years.  In 1872 when Lucas was eight years old, they came to Clark County, Wis., settling in the town of Beaver, being among the first settlers.  The family practiced the Lutheran faith.

In Sec. 18 of  "The First Owner's Map" for Perkins (later Sherwood) twp., the patentees are Carl Stange, Paul Stange, Ferdinand Stange, Fred Stange, Mary Stange, and Gottlieb Stange.  Although his life was short, it is obvious that Lucas grew up surrounded by close family members.  He passed away of unknown cause in 1876 and was buried in the Town of Grant Cemetery.
