Burkard, Father G. P. (1855 - Feb 1908)

The following is taken from the paper at Orville: "Rev. Father G. P. Burkard died about 10:30 o'clock yesterday morning, after a slight illness lasting only two days. He considered his indisposition of such a slight nature that on Monday he said mass as usual. Death was due to an obstruction of the bowels.

The news of the priest's death soon spread about town and profound expressions of regret were heard on ever side. Father Burkard had bee in Orville but a little over a year, but had won a host of friends here among all denominations. He was widely read, in touch with all the great movements in the world, and a man of broad and liberal views. As a consequence he won many friends outside of his own denomination. He was beloved by his congregation for the ministering care with which he looked after his parishioners, and admired by them for his eloquence and force in the pulpit.

The deceased lacked but a few days of being 53 years of age. He was born in New York, but spent a great part of his life in Boston, which he considered as his home. Shortly after entering college he took the vows of the order of Jesuits, and after years of study in America and Europe, he was, at age 32, ordained as a priest of the order. After his ordination, he was sent successively to a number of important parishes, and finally in order that his health might be improved, he was sent to California and assigned to Orville. He came here from Clark County, Wisconsin. He leaves three sisters and a brother, all of who reside in Boston."

A Requiem mass will be said for the repose of his soul at ten o'clock Saturday morning at the Catholic Church in this village (Loyal, Clark County, Wis.).
