Bruley, Joseph (1834? - 26 Apr 1918)

Joseph Bruley, one of the old residents of Neillsville, Clark County, Wis., died April 26, 1918, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Wm. Leroy, at Antigo, where he had gone on a visit, aged 83 years.

Mr. Burley was born in the province of Quebec, Canada, and when a mere boy began the life of a woodsman and riverman. For 50 consecutive winters he worked in a lumber camp, a record that has been equaled by few. He was not only competent in all lines of camp work, but was a capable man in many ways and found employment at times when other men were out of employment. He was married in Canada to Miss Kate Bone, and came to Clark County about 55 years ago, coming in from La Crosse with an ox team. To the hardy pioneer men and women of their type who braved the wilderness and struck the first hard blows for civilization, the people of the present days owe a great debt of gratitude; they laid the foundation of all we enjoy today. Mr. Bruley is survived by his wife and seven children: Thomas who is here at present; Mrs. Wm. Leroy of Antigo; Mrs. A. L. Motz of Minneapolis; Mrs. C. A. Torrey of St. Paul; Lieut. George Bruley with the U.S. Army in France; Arthur, somewhere in the West, and Fred of Neillsville.

The funeral was held Sunday at the Congregational Church, rev. G.W. Longenecker officiating.

Responses

In found the obituary above for Joseph Bruley among the clippings of my Great Grandmother. I am confused about Joseph’s wife. In the obituary posted above mine lists his wife as Miss Kate Banks. In this attached obituary there is no name given for his wife though the 2 obituaries are similar but not identical. Then looking at Philomena Loyer Bruley’s obituary on your site, she is obviously the wife of this same Joseph Brule and the mother of their 14-16 children (number varies from different sources including their own and their children’s obituaries). I’m trying to reconcile a Miss Kate Banks and Philomena Loyer. Any thoughts? A transcription error?  Please let me know if you have an explanation.  Jackie Wyer
