Smith, Elizabeth H. (5 Augl 1837 - 14 Feb 1922)

Tuesday morning, Feb. 14th, 1922, one of Greenwood’s pioneer residents was called to the other world, where sorrow and care are not known.

Elizabeth Herse Smith was born in Toronto, Canada, Aug. 5th, 1837, where she resided until she was united in marriage to Robert Smith, Jan. 31st, 1859.

In 1871 the family moved to Black River Falls, where they resided until 1874, when they moved to Greenwood, Clark County, Wis., where they have since lived. Her husband preceded her in death March 1, 1894, since which time she has lived with her son Mark on the home place.

The deceased was the mother of a large and respected family. Ten children were born to her, nine of who survive her: Wm. Of Milwaukee; Mrs. Geo. Huntley and Mrs. Solon Davis of Granton; Mrs. Ed Shupe of Loyal; Mrs. Ira Davis of Oakland, Ore.; Mrs. Gus Vine of Greenwood; Sam, Rob and Mark, all of Greenwood. One sun, Hugh, died Nov. 27th, 1893.

She also leaves to mourn her loss, one brother, Frank Herse of Algoma. Also thirty-one grandchildren and twenty-two great-grandchildren.

Grandma Smith, as she was called by both old and young, was a kind mother and friend and will be greatly missed by all in the community where she resided.

Funeral services were held at the home Friday at 12:30. Rev. Bickell conducted the services. Burial was made in the Greenwood Cemetery.
