Pfunder, Fred (8 FEB 1835 - 25 Jul 1920)

Last Sunday nigh at 9 o’clock Mr. Fred Pfunder, who has been ailing for some time, passed into the great beyond, leaving earthly cares and sorrows behind; to sleep the long sleep of the just and right.

He was born in Baden, Germany, Feb. 8, 1835, and was in his 85th year at the time of his death. He came to this country in 1852. After remaining in New York two years he came to Wisconsin and settled in Manitowoc Co., where he chose farming for an occupation, being one of the sturdy pioneers to first conquer the forest and subdue the soil.

He was always known as a law abiding citizen, loyal to his country, a kind and loving father and husband and a good neighbor; he was held in such high esteem by his friends and neighbors, that he was elected to the legislature for the years 1879 and 1880.

He was married in 1862 to Miss Catherine McMillan. He leaves to mourn for him the wife, one son, Fred H., one grandson, Dr. Malcolm Pfunder and four great-grandchildren.

The funeral was held on Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 at his late home, interment at the Greenwood Cemetery.

Owing to the absence of Rev. Moats, Rev. A.E. Wendt of Owen officiated at the funeral.

The Gleaner, in company with many friends, join in extending sympathy and condolence to the bereaved family.

Well if you ever look at this post again as you seem to have posted a long time ago back in 2003! well it is now 2008 and have found the name on this list I am studying this name on the behalf of my wife who is an us citizen and who has a Pfunder in her family ....can you help please? do you know if thios chap had a brother who also came to the states from Germany? His name was Louis and came to the stats in 1853 he would of been the older one of the two? hope you respond to this ...Thank you Mr. Martin Jowett
