Holmes, A.C. (13 JAN 1851 - 21 Apr 1916)

Last week Wednesday Mrs. L.H. Howard and Mrs. W.A. Campman were called to Lindsey, Mont., by a telegram announcing the serious illness of their father, A.C. Holmes, who died Friday Apr. 21st, 1916.

Mr. Holmes was born in St. Lawrence Co., N.Y., Jan. 13, 1851. He came to Clark County in 1871 and settled at Maple Works and opened up a farm there. On Nov. 7, 1877 he was married to Miss Carrie Downer, who survives him. After residing at Maple Works they moved to Greenwood, and for several years carried on the George Huntzicker farm and the large farm of Mrs. Root. Six years ago they moved to Lindsey, Mont. and took up a claim, which has been their home since.

Mr. Holmes suffered a slight stroke of paralysis early in the winter, but had apparently recovered and was feeling well until the first of last week, when he had another attack of apoplexy.

He leaves his wife and two daughters, Mrs. Howard and Mrs. Campman, and one son Leslie, who is on the farm in Montana. He leaves also one sister, Mrs. Eunice Fraser of Bellingham, Wash.

Mr. Holmes was a pioneer nearly all his life, of that type which the east sent into the West to conquer and subdue the wilderness. He was honest and upright in all his dealings, large hearted, and a kind husband, father and neighbor.

The remains accompanied by Mrs. Holmes and daughters arrived here Monday, the funeral taking place at the home of Mr. and Mrs. W.A. Campman Wednesday afternoon, Rev. G.W. Longenecker officiating.
