Humphrey, Jerry H. (1 JUN 1930 - 16 JUN 2005)

Jerry H. Humphrey, 75, Neillsville, died Thursday, June 16, 2005, in the palliative Care Unit of Saint Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, June 20, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Neillsville. The Rev. Woodrow H. Pace officiated. Music was provided by Ronald Resong, organist, and St. Mary’s Choie. Burial was in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery. Pallbearers were his sons, Steve Humphrey, Arnie Humphrey, Van Humphrey, Jerry Humphrey, Brian Humphrey, and Phil Humphrey.

Jerry Harwood Humphrey was born on June 1, 1930, in Coloma, to Verne and Cora (nee Van Buskirk) Humphrey. He attended and graduated from Hancock High School in 1947, and then worked for two years at Coloma Mercantile, a grocery store in Coloma. He married Mildred Haplin on Nov. 26, 1949, in Wautoma. They moved to Franklin, where he worked for six years and then moved to Chili, where he worked for Roddis, which eventually became Weyerhaeuser Door Co. He worked there for 30 years and also farmed part time before retiring in 1987. He was a jokester and enjoyed playing cards, telling stories (he even wrote a book about his life). Most important to him, however was his family. He enjoyed picnicking with his children after church every Sunday, and many family gatherings and he was very supportive of his children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events.

Survivors include his wife, Mildred; eight children, Steven (Lou Ann) Humphrey, Marshfield, Arnie (Judy) Humphrey, Durand, Van (Julie) Humphrey, Granton, Jerry (Kris) Humphrey, Hixton, Connie (Scott) Elmhorst, Neillsville, Brian (Tami) Humphrey, Sparta, Carole (David) Hohenstein, Black River Falls, and Phil (Sharlene) Humphrey, Keller, Texas; 26 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Judy Humphrey, Greenwood; two brothers, Vernon (Verna) Humphrey, Coloma, and Royce (Geneva) Humphrey, Hancock; and one sister, Florence (Bill) Rooney, Geneva, Ill.

Preceding him in death was one son, Tom; two grandsons, Randy Humphrey and Dallas Humphrey; one great-grandson, Jacob LeClercq; one great-granddaughter, Kylah Humphrey-Lindsley; his parents; one brother, Robert Humphrey; three sisters, Ivy Clark, Evelyn Ueeck and Athel Dredske.

The Gesche Funeral Home, Neillsville, assisted the family with arrangements.
